Asking ChatGPT or Claude about Sentinel
Paste a message into your AI, or add Sentinel to Claude once and for all: it guides you step by step from this documentation, tutorial videos included.
An AI like ChatGPT or Claude can guide you through Sentinel. You ask it how to do something; it reads the right page of this documentation and answers with the steps, the link to the article and the tutorial video when there is one.
There are two ways to go about it: paste a message at the start of a conversation, with any AI, or add Sentinel to Claude once and for all. Nothing to install in Sentinel, and your account is never touched.
Where: on this site, at the bottom of the Documentation page, and in the Ask AI menu at the top of every article.
What the AI answers
A question about checklists, and the answer of an AI that read the documentation.
- 1Your question, in your own words.
- 2The page the AI read before answering.
- 3The steps, with the exact button labels.
- 4The link to the article's section, to check.
- 5The tutorial video, when the topic has one.
The AI answers in your language, with the interface labels in that language. It says whether it happens on the web, on the phone or both, and gives both paths when they differ.
With any AI: paste the message
Copy the message. At the bottom of the Documentation page, the Ask your AI about Sentinel block shows the message, and the Copy button puts it on your clipboard. Here it is:
Help me use Sentinel, the trail maintenance software. First read https://trail-sentinel.com/en/assistant.md and follow its instructions.
Paste it into your AI. Open a new conversation in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or Le Chat, paste the message and send it. With ChatGPT, the Open in ChatGPT button does both at once: it opens a conversation and sends the message for you.
Ask your question. The AI reads the instructions page, then asks what you want to do. You can also write your question right after the message, in the same send.
The message lasts for the current conversation: in a new conversation, paste it again.
Your AI needs to be able to read a web page. If it says it can't access the address, turn on web search in its settings, or try another AI.
With Claude: once and for all
Claude accepts connectors. Once Sentinel is added, every conversation can search the documentation, with no message to paste.
Add the connector. At the bottom of the Documentation page, click Add to Claude. Claude opens on the window for adding a custom connector, already filled in with the name, Trail Sentinel, and the address: check it and confirm. If you're not signed in to Claude, it asks you to sign in first.
By hand, if the link doesn't open: in Claude's settings, in the connectors section, add a custom connector with this address, without authentication:
https://trail-sentinel.com/api/mcp
Good to know:
- Claude's free plan allows one custom connector.
- On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner of the organization adds the connector; each member then connects it on their side.
- Once added on the web or in the desktop app, the connector is also available in Claude's mobile app.
With ChatGPT
The message to paste works on every ChatGPT plan, free included, and even without an account.
For a permanent connection, ChatGPT also lets you, depending on your plan and your organization's settings, add a custom MCP server in its plugins. Use the same address, https://trail-sentinel.com/api/mcp, without authentication.
With a developer tool
Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other tools that run commands can install the connector themselves: paste the message, and they'll offer to. To install it directly:
- Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http trail-sentinel https://trail-sentinel.com/api/mcp - Codex:
codex mcp add trail-sentinel --url https://trail-sentinel.com/api/mcp - Other tools: an HTTP MCP server, at
https://trail-sentinel.com/api/mcp.
About a specific page
At the top of every article, the Ask AI menu helps when your question is about the page you're reading:
- Copy page puts the article's text on your clipboard, ready to paste into an AI.
- Open in ChatGPT opens a conversation about this page.
- Copy the message for an AI does the same for Claude, Gemini or another AI.
- View as markdown opens the page as plain text.
What the AI sees, and what it doesn't
The AI reads the public documentation of this site, nothing else. It has no access to your Sentinel account, your trails or your tasks: it can't tell you how many tasks are open, and it changes nothing. The connector is read-only.
Never give it your password. And check what matters: an AI can be wrong. That's why it ends with the link to the article, which is the reference.
